Q&A with David Hayward, MD at Pure Telecom

We decided to grill our Managing Director, David Hayward, so we could get to know him a little bit better.

What do Pluto and David have in common? Read on …

How long have you worked at Pure Telecom?

Three and a half years.

Where do you live?

Stourbridge, West Midlands.

What attracted you to work for Pure Telecom and what’s the best thing about the company?

A number of things attracted me to the company, initially it was the owner and his vision for Pure Telecom, then it was the challenge to develop/deliver a strategy that would grow a business that already had an excellent reputation within the market.

The best thing about the company is working with the people that we have in Pure. A company is only as good as its people and we are very fortunate to have such a committed, dedicated and successful group of people at Pure.

Did you need any specific qualifications or experience for your job?

I needed to demonstrate a background in my ability to design strategies, deliver against company goals, lead teams, demonstrate change management capability and grow a business, all experience that I have gained in working senior roles within the telecoms industry for over 20 years.

What does a typical day look like?

In short, there is not such a thing, which is part of the enjoyment.

However, my main role is to ensure that we create an environment where our people are fully respected, supported and motivated to do well.

How would others in the office describe you?

(Not my words!) – Fair, dedicated, excellent at prioritising, excellent at creating a vision, organised and highly ambitious.

What is your most annoying habit?

Not washing up my cup, I’m told!

What hobbies do you have outside of work?

Family aside, a keen cricketer, poor golfer and an avid Aston Villa football fan.

What advice would you want to give someone wanting to work in the industry?

It’s a great industry to work in, it’s fast paced, always interesting and can be very rewarding, but requires a lot of hard work!

Is there anything your colleagues don’t know about you that they might be surprised by?

I have played badminton, cricket and football at County level.

Which television/film character would you say you are most like and why?

Got to be Micky’s friend Pluto! A faithful friend who stands by his team.

What’s been the highlight of your career so far/the thing you are most proud of doing?

Working with Pure Telecom, seeing the company grow and the team develop has been both very rewarding and extremely enjoyable.
